The book of Acts:  The Holy Spirit comes

October 21, 2012  by Kasey Crawford

Today’s Passage: Acts 2:1-21

(Review) Acts 1:1-26

In the first chapter, the author (Luke) gives us a framework, a lens, through which to understand everything else that happens in the book, namely: you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…to the end of the earth    Acts 1:8

(New) Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place 2:1

Pentecost was festival that celebrated a couple things (which God fulfilled in a whole new way at this Pentecost):

  • The giving of the Mosaic Law on Mount Sinai-when God gave to his redeemed people the way of _______ by which they would carry out his _____________.
  • The beginning of the harvest season for farmers. Farmers brought the “first fruits” as an offering of thanks and in prayerful expectation that an ____________ ___________ was coming.

…And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit… 2:4

What is the Holy Spirit?      We see most clearly in the life of Jesus.

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.                                                                                                             Mark 1:9-10

From this point on Jesus began his ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit to go and bring _____________ to earth everywhere he went.

So in summary (in this setting), the Holy Spirit is the _______________ __________ of God to bring heaven to earth.

The book of Acts is starts off by showing that the same Holy Spirit that empowered the supernatural life of Jesus is going to now empower his _________________.  Too good to be true? Compare these verses…

And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him…  Matthew 3:16

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness…   Luke 4:1

And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…   Acts 2:3-4

Just like in the life of Jesus, now in the life of his followers, the Holy Spirit has come to ________ upon and ________ them up with the supernatural power of God to bring heaven to earth.

What’s happening in the beginning of Acts is the ___________ of the baton.  The mission is not complete, so Jesus sends the same Holy Spirit that was upon him and filling him to now rest upon and fill up his followers so that they too can be ___________ of __________ to earth.

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance… “we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed…                                                                                                                 Acts 2:5,11,12

When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, it is in order to meet the _________ of the moment that will best bring the Kingdom of God, according to God’s wisdom and purpose.

In verses 2:17-21 Peter claims that what is happening is the fulfillment of God’s prophecy through Joel about the “last days” pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon _____ of God’s people-men, women and children.
