The Gospel of Mark: Releasing Power

February 5th, 2012  by Kasey Crawford

Today’s Passage: Mark 5:21-6:

Review…(Mark 1:1-5:34)

A framework for understanding Mark: The book of Mark puts on display how Jesus brings more of heaven to earth and invites his followers to experience the same as they learn a new (kingdom) way of life from the Master and respond with regular repentance (turning to God) and belief (taking action).

New (Mark 5:21-6:6)

“Why does it seem like some people (and churches) seem to be a magnet for miracles and the extraordinary while others only just hear about them?”

3 people in this section of Mark give an aspect of the answer: a outcasted woman, a synagogue ruler and a hometown crew.

An outcasted woman…

she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”  (5:27-28)

She shows us an incredible reality about the kingdom of God: ____________ produces _____________.

A synagogue leader…

Like the woman this man is in a dire situation, his daughter is dying.  But like the woman he is full of expectant faith. “Please come put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” (5:23)

“Your daughter is dead,”… “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

It was one thing for Jairus to expect Jesus to heal his sick daughter, but when she dies then we’re talking about another whole level of power needed.

Jairus reveals that an aspect of the kingdom breaking into our lives has to do with who we ____________ Jesus to be, is what we will ____________ from him.

Immediately the girl stood up…At this they were completely astonished.  (5:42)

What is translated completely astonished is actually three words in the Greek that are worth breaking down…

Exestesan –a verb, means ___________ or amazed

Megale- an adjective, means large or ________

Ekstasei- a noun, means ______________ or ecstasy

Are you greatly astonished with amazement at the power of Jesus’ work on a regular basis in your life?

Jesus left there and went to his hometown… “Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son? And they took offense at him… He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 And he was amazed at their lack of faith. (6:1-6)

It says that he could not do any miracles (dynamis) there.  The word miracle here is the same word as power Jesus realized that power (dynamis) had gone out from him. (5:30)

Dynamis =power, mighty deed, miracle

The woman’s expectant faith brought a ___________ of Jesus’ power. The hometown crew’s the expectation of nothing kept Jesus’ power ___________ up within. Jesus’ power loves to flow out of him to the faith that expects it.

A take home prayer…” Lord, give me fresh eyes to see you for who you are and the courage to expect you to come in power regularly
